Definition of Physiatrics

(Fysiatrian määritelmä UEMS:lle)

The name of speciality is officially Physiatrics in Finland but Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine is used in international co-operation. The core research and main clinical activities are focused on non-surgical management of causes and consequences of functional impairment in different non-inflammatory musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions and syndromes in a wide range of age groups. Diagnostic evaluation is completed in addition to usual medical diagnostic tools by using specific measurement and assessment techniques like quantitatively movement analysis if necessary. Therapeutic interventions in PRM include medical treatments, therapeutic exercise, physical modalities, orthotics, prosthetics, and multidisciplinary teamwork. Referrals to therapeutic interventions conducted by physical therapists, occupational therapists and orthopaedic technicians are in complex cases made and re-evaluated by PRM specialists. Disease specific rehabilitation is usually included in programmes of other disciplines. PRM might be consulted also in programmes of vocational rehabilitation.(.doc)
